Occupational Therapy

OccupationalTherapyThe role of occupational therapy is to work with a patient and help them achieve a feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction in regards to their life. This is done through the use of specific activities designed to achieve functional outcomes that promote overall health. These activities help an individual with their ability to perceive, desire and recall. They also work on an individual’s ability to plan and carry out routines and tasks for the purpose of self-maintenance. In turn, this helps to develop, maintain or restore the highest possible level of independence. Occupational therapy is designed to help people do the day-to-day tasks that are required of them and to enable them to take part in their community. This type of therapy also helps people to develop, recover or maintain daily functioning and career skills.

The Importance of Occupational Therapy in Addiction Recovery

Occupational therapists help patients perform all different kinds of activities, ranging from computer use to the ability to complete daily tasks such as dressing, cooking and eating. Physical exercises may be used to increase dexterity while other activities may be chosen to improve visual skills and the ability to differentiate patterns. For example, a client with short-term memory loss might be encouraged to make lists to help aid in recall, and a person with coordination problems might be assigned exercises to improve hand-eye coordination.

Occupational therapists also use computers programs to help clients improve decision-making, abstract-reasoning, problem-solving and perceptual skills. They also help clients improve their memory, sequencing and coordination. All of which are important for independent living. Occupational therapists are often skilled in psychological strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and play an important role in the recovery process of individuals suffering from addiction. The ultimate goal of occupational therapy is for the individual to successfully reenter the workforce as a productive, responsible and contributing member of society.
